The Political Theory of Bernard Stiegler
My first book, Returning to Judgment, assessed the significance of the work of Bernard Stiegler to continental political theory. I argue that he advocates for break with the reticence towards political judgement in the tradition. This book was featured on the Hermetix Podcast and has been reviewed in Technophany.
I have also published on Stiegler's influences (such as Blanchot) and his views on ideology critique and work.
In progress work on Stiegler's political theory includes two papers on implied perfectionist conceptions of epistemic agency and epistemic normativity within his concept of proletarianization.
Imagining Life Beyond Work: Post-Work as a Tradition of Political Thought
Post-work thought is a term that has generated large amounts of attention both within political theory and beyond, however what the philosophical foundations of this body of work have gone largely unexamined. Moreover, most attention has been focused on post-work as assuming large scale automation of necessary labour. Between November 2024 and November 2026 I will be working on a Leverhulme Trust funded project that examines the scope of post-work thought, the shared features of its diagnosis of the harms of work, and how this diagnosis grounds its policy proposals.
The major output of this project, a book currently entitled 'Imagining Life Beyond Work: Post-Work as a Worldmaking Project,' develops an account of the foundations of post-work thought that are not reliant on assumptions about widespread automation.
This project builds on earlier published work on post-work's case for reduced working time and the place of work within political theory.
Ontology, Anthropology and Ideology and Continental Political Theory
Influenced by themes in my work on Stiegler, I have also published several papers on ideology critique in contemporary continental political theory and on the relationship between the recent ontological turn in anthropology and the use of ontology in political theory.
